History & Church Approval

On the First Friday of Lent in 1936, Mother Maria Pierina De Micheli (beatified 30 May 2010) reported a vision of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who expressed His desire for a devotion in reparation for sins and blasphemies committed against His Holy Face.

In later visions, Jesus requested that a medal bearing His Holy Face be made. Mother Pierina was shown the image of the Holy Shroud of Turin, and in 1940 received authorization from the Church Curia to proceed with the medal.

In 1958, Pope Pius XII formally approved both the devotion and the medal, and declared the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus for the universal Roman Catholic Church to be celebrated annually on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), preceded by a nine-day novena of prayer.

Meaning & Symbolism of the Medal

Front – The Holy Face of Jesus
The front depicts the Holy Face of Christ, based on the Shroud of Turin, with the inscription from Psalm 66:2:

“ILLUMINA DOMINE VULTUM TUUM SUPER NOS”
(“May the light of Your Face, O Lord, shine upon us.”)

This side represents Christ’s suffering, mercy, and His call for loving reparation.

Back – The Holy Eucharist
The reverse side features the Sacred Host, with the letters IHS and the inscription:

“MANE NOBISCUM DOMINE”
(“Stay with us, O Lord.”)

This powerfully unites the Passion of Christ with His Real Presence in the Eucharist.

According to the writings of Blessed Pierina, Our Lady described the Holy Face medal as:
